Call for Papers

For the Summer 2027 edition of Pennsylvania History: A Journal of Mid-Atlantic Studies, published by the Pennsylvania Historical Association, is issuing a call for articles to be included in a special issue honoring John B. Frantz (1936–2026), longtime professor of American history at Penn State University Park.

The Editor seeks proposals of scholarly articles (25–35 pages, double-spaced) featuring new research on the topics that John studied and taught, including survey courses in American history and Pennsylvania history and graduate courses in Colonial and Revolutionary American history.

His scholarship addressed religious histories, social development, and political forces in early America, especially among Pennsylvania Germans in the 18th and 19th centuries. He was also a long-term life member of the Pennsylvania Historical Association, holding every executive office except treasurer. Therefore, articles on the history of PHA are welcome as well. Essays may focus on events and issues relating to the above topics in Pennsylvania and the mid-Atlantic from the seventeenth century to the present.

Articles placing Pennsylvania within the larger context of national and international religion are also encouraged. Additionally, vignettes (less than 1,000 words) that showcase a particular artifact or document relating to the topics will also be considered.
